Great things are always happening here at RCC. We believe in moving from going to great. We are pleased with our progress but never satisfied. We know we can always do better, and we keep moving. When I say "we" I mean the whole family. The instructors, the staff, the students, we're all in this together. Sure that might sound over used, saying: we're all in this together. But it's true. Instead of thinking of it as a cliche, we should think of it as an axiom, a truth. If the the school didn't exist where would students go for their education? If there were no students, there would be no point in having a school with teachers and staff.
We are in this together, and now we will start yet another year. How wonderful.

Computer-Based Testing is around the corner
More and more of our GED students are computer savvy. Many have grown up with computers and feel comfortable with them. The GED Testing Service which oversees all GED testing in the United States, Canada and other international testing sites is moving away from the old paper and pencil test to having their tests done on the computer. This is in an effort to reach more students and make testing possible for many students who would otherwise not obtain their GED for various reasons. By offering the GED tests on computers, students will be able to get in and test faster and at more convenient times for themselves.
We anticipate that by 2013 we will be using computers for GED tests. This is why we at RCC are moving our testing to computers as well. We are looking to stay ahead of the curve and have our students ready for GED computer-based testing when the moment comes. In the last year we have introduced pre-GED testing on computers and then we went online with our assessment tool TABE. These steps have been done to bring faster and more reliable results, and to help students feel more comfortable testing on computers.

GED Graduates are now Associate graduates.
This last week our curriculum students participated in their graduation ceremony. Two of our former GED students participated in that graduation. Both graduated with honors and belonged to the PTK honors association. Congrats to them.

Big Changes
It's been a while since I've posted anything on here. That would be because, we have been busy. Our program has seen some big changes. We have only one GED Examiner, Jared. Lisa left us for bigger and better things in Archdale, and we wish her success as the director of the Archdale Center. We are moving towards more computer-based testing, and incorporating technology into the classroom. We even offer on-line GED classes as well as a correspondence course. Students can earn hours toward testing in the comfort of their own home. If you have questions about these distance education opportunities you should call Melissa at 336-633-0148. Big changes for our GED program
July has brought with it a whirlwind of changes. First we have to congratulate our Coordinator of Assessments/GED Chief Examiner Lisa Bock for her new job as Director of Archdale Campus. WAY TO GO LISA! We will miss her in the GED program. Luckily though she will still have close ties to the program being the head of the Archdale Campus where we have a wondeful and vibrant GED community there. Since Lisa has moved on bigger and better things a vacancy was left. Jared Hotchkiss, who has worked with Lisa for the last two years will take on the role that Lisa had, and try to fill her shoes.
Because of the tough financial times our wonderful state is in, our leaders here at the local level have have to make some tough decisions. Jared will now be doing all of the testing for GED, from placement to practice, and then on to the big one- GED Tests. Will maybe not all-he will get some help on the placement testing from our wonderful Student Retention Counselor, Pam Freeze. Pam has over 20 years of experience with our amazing school, she knows this place inside and out. If ever you have any questions just stop by her office or give her a call at 336-633-0147. If she doesn't know the answer to your question, she certainly knows who has the answer-she's just that awesome!
Since Jared, and with some help from his friend Pam will be doing the testing at various locations throughout the county, like our spacious main campus in Asheboro, to our beautiful campus in Archdale, and to our locations at the DRC and the Prison, testing schedules will have to be reduced. Where we once had the ability to GED Test at each of these four facilities each week, that will no longer be managable. Other test schedules will not be as plentiful as before. The GED Testing program of RCC is still dedicated to the success and well being of it's students. If ever you have a concern or question call at 336-633-0160.
Along with the changes come our switch from CASAS placement testing to TABE. TABE testing will be help us and the students as a better gauge for GED Testing readiness. Our switch to TABE testing was effective as of July 1st.
Along with all of these changes include an increase in our testing fees. GED Testing will now cost $25 per student. This flat rate covers the cost of all 5 tests and any retests that a student needs to do.
Keep informed of all changes as they happen, as we move forward there will certainly be more changes to the program, in the hopes that we can better serve our students, because you are why we do what we do.

Graduation Ceremony May 13 at 7pm
We have finished another semester here in the Basic Skills Department. He have had a lot of success and new developments as well. We are doing computer based practice testing now, which is way awesome! What's cooler than that though are the 129 graduates from this semester. 57 of them are going to participate in the graduation ceremony. The ceremony will be held at Asheboro High School on May 13 at 7pm. Everyone is invited.

December Graduation
I would like to take a moment to say Congrats to all of our graduates today. We have over a hundred students who earned their GED Credential since August of this year. Today is their graduation, and that is AWESOME! We will miss those students that are leaving our program, but we wish them success in their future endeavors. The college will be closed until Jan. 4, 2011, and we look forward to another successful year.
