Big changes for our GED program

July has brought with it a whirlwind of changes. First we have to congratulate our Coordinator of Assessments/GED Chief Examiner Lisa Bock for her new job as Director of Archdale Campus. WAY TO GO LISA! We will miss her in the GED program. Luckily though she will still have close ties to the program being the head of the Archdale Campus where we have a wondeful and vibrant GED community there. Since Lisa has moved on bigger and better things a vacancy was left. Jared Hotchkiss, who has worked with Lisa for the last two years will take on the role that Lisa had, and try to fill her shoes.
Because of the tough financial times our wonderful state is in, our leaders here at the local level have have to make some tough decisions. Jared will now be doing all of the testing for GED, from placement to practice, and then on to the big one- GED Tests. Will maybe not all-he will get some help on the placement testing from our wonderful Student Retention Counselor, Pam Freeze. Pam has over 20 years of experience with our amazing school, she knows this place inside and out. If ever you have any questions just stop by her office or give her a call at 336-633-0147. If she doesn't know the answer to your question, she certainly knows who has the answer-she's just that awesome!
Since Jared, and with some help from his friend Pam will be doing the testing at various locations throughout the county, like our spacious main campus in Asheboro, to our beautiful campus in Archdale, and to our locations at the DRC and the Prison, testing schedules will have to be reduced. Where we once had the ability to GED Test at each of these four facilities each week, that will no longer be managable. Other test schedules will not be as plentiful as before. The GED Testing program of RCC is still dedicated to the success and well being of it's students. If ever you have a concern or question call at 336-633-0160.
Along with the changes come our switch from CASAS placement testing to TABE. TABE testing will be help us and the students as a better gauge for GED Testing readiness. Our switch to TABE testing was effective as of July 1st.
Along with all of these changes include an increase in our testing fees. GED Testing will now cost $25 per student. This flat rate covers the cost of all 5 tests and any retests that a student needs to do.
Keep informed of all changes as they happen, as we move forward there will certainly be more changes to the program, in the hopes that we can better serve our students, because you are why we do what we do.

Graduation Ceremony May 13 at 7pm

We have finished another semester here in the Basic Skills Department. He have had a lot of success and new developments as well. We are doing computer based practice testing now, which is way awesome! What's cooler than that though are the 129 graduates from this semester. 57 of them are going to participate in the graduation ceremony. The ceremony will be held at Asheboro High School on May 13 at 7pm. Everyone is invited.
Congratulations to all of our graduates. We wish you success in your future endeavors. Keep moving forward!

December Graduation

I would like to take a moment to say Congrats to all of our graduates today. We have over a hundred students who earned their GED Credential since August of this year. Today is their graduation, and that is AWESOME! We will miss those students that are leaving our program, but we wish them success in their future endeavors. The college will be closed until Jan. 4, 2011, and we look forward to another successful year.

Summer Graduation

Graduation for the Randolph Community College Basic Skills will be August 16 @ 7pm in the Asheboro High School Performing Arts Center. We already have more than 40 graduates either with a GED Diploma or Adult High School Diploma. If you are one of those graduates come out and participate in the event. Watch your mailbox for the letter from the Dean regarding this wonderful event. We hope to see as many of our wonderful graduates walk across that stage. There are no tickets needed, but seating is based on a first come first served basis. Remember to mark your calendar for August 16!

Today is the first day of summer, and the days are only going to get hotter. Why not beat the heat and come into our cool and comfortable classrooms. We are well underway for our summer semester, but there is always room for more students in our classes. If you have been thinking about going back to school and earning your GED Diploma now is the best time to do it. If you start on the path to getting your GED now you might be ready to start taking college or continuing education classes in August when all the new classes begin. Don't delay putting off your chance at earning a GED Diploma and opening doors to many new and exciting opportunities.

Get paid to get practice

The GED Testing Service and Pearson VUE have teamed up to create a computer based test of the official GED Tests. You can help shape the future of GED Testing by participating in this pilot program. The GED Testing Service wants to see the comparability between scores achieved by a computer based test (CBT) and those achieved by the traditional paper and pencil test. You can earn up to $35 per test that you take. The score that you recieve from the computer based test will not count in your score that is applied towards your North Carolina GED Diploma. If you think you'd like to be a part of this groundbreaking event come into our testing center or call us at 336-633-0160 or 336-633-0148 and we can answer your questions, and help get you set up to take the CBT.

A New Year

It's a brand new year, and of course it's a time to make goals, and resolutions. We here at RCC hope that one of your goals would be to further you're education. The creators of the GED practice test have put practice tests on line for students to practice. The web address is gedpractice.com, or you can click on the link above. This is an exceptional tool to help students practice and get ready for the real test. Any score you recieved from a practice test cannot be used as a practice test score here at Randolph Community College to give you admittance to the offical GED tests. This website will certainly help you as you prepare for practice tests, and the GED tests.

Transcripts

When you want to request transcripts showing your GED test scores, and proof that you have received your GED Diploma from the State of North Carolina you must submit a request to Raleigh. We do not hold your transcripts nor do we process them here at Randolph Community College. We can give you what is called "an unofficial score report" which we print out; this tells you your testing history, your points per test and your overall total of points. This however is not an official transcript. Most employers and all colleges and universities require an official transcript of your GED Diploma. To do this you need to send a request with the following information: the name you used when you took the tests, Social Security Number, Date of Birth, the approximate year you tested (you don't need the exact year, just try to get as close to it as possible), where you took the test (Randolph Community College), current mailing address, phone number, and signature. If you are requesting transcripts to be sent to an employer or school you should write the name, address, and if available, the fax number of recipient.

Pre-GED testing scores

It has been asked, "why do I need to get a 480 on my practice GED test in order for me to take the official GED test, when I only need a score of 410 to pass?"

There are a few reasons why we have this policy in place here at Randolph Community College. Some students will remember that the passing score on a practice GED test was 450. When we had the policy in place we had many students that would get 450 on the practice test and then not score high enough on the real test. The practice test has only half the amount of questions on the official test. According to extensive studies, there is the possibility that one’s practice score and ones official score may fluctuate by 50 points. So if someone scores a 480 on the practice test, it gives that student some wiggle room in case they have an off day at the official testing.

Although the minimum score needed to pass any one of the five GED tests is 410, the cumulative score of all five tests has to equal 2,250 points. That is an average of 450 on each test. By these new policies and testing practices now in place we have seen a remarkable difference in how much better students transition from practice tests to the official GED testing. This is part of our how we at RCC are going from good to great! We are creating opportunities and changing lives.

Graduation

For all of you that have received your GED diploma this semester, it is not too late to registar for the graduation ceremonies. You can purchase your cap and gown through the campus bookstore. Graduation will be December 17 at 7pm in the LRC auditorium. It will be a great event, and a night to remember. We hope to see you there!

GED myth busting

You can take a test up to three times in a calendar year. That means you can take for example the social studies test up to three times between January 1st and December 31. Once you have exceeded your three attempts you will need to wait until the following year to take the test again.

Your scores do not disappear or become invalid after a year. If you have taken the GED tests since 2002 your scores are still valid. The GED Testing Service is currently updating and making changes to the series of tests. But don't let this worry you, we will give you ample notice to the changes and if you are currently taking the tests there is no reason to doubt that you won't finish before this current series of tests become invalid.

No you cannot get your GED online or take a computer test. Although GEDTS is currently looking into computer based testing.

The writing test is not the hardest test. No one test is designed to just utterly demolish any test taker. Every test is constructed to evaluate the general education of the test takers. Depending on one's ablities and strengths some tests are easier and others are more difficult.

No we cannot give you scores or tell you how you did on the test over the phone. If you want to know your scores come into our GED office with a picture ID and we will be more than happy to print you a score report. It doesn't matter if your dear Aunt Sally got her scores over the phone or if your classmate Joe got his-the truth is that it probably didn't even happen, because it shouldn't. We here at Randolph Community College take the privacy and security of our students and test takers seriously.

Spanish GED Test available

Starting in January 2010 we will be offering GED tests in Spanish. They are just like the English GED tests. For those taking the GED Spanish tests you can take an English proficiency test. This way on your GED Diploma it will say that you passed the GED tests in Spanish and you are still proficient in English.

We offer tests every Monday at the Asheboro Campus, and every Wednesday at the Archdale Campus. Tests begin at 8:30am, 12:30pm, 3:30pm, and 6:00pm.
